U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg Arrives in Kyiv Amid Tensions
Keith Kellogg, the U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, made an unanticipated visit to Kyiv on Wednesday. His arrival was captured by the national broadcaster Suspilne, showing him disembarking from a train and being welcomed by U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink.
Kellogg's visit comes as a surprise, as he was initially expected to arrive the following day. Upon his arrival, he indicated that he was there to listen and gather insights, aiming to provide a comprehensive report to President Donald Trump to help assess the ongoing situation in Ukraine. He acknowledged the importance of security guarantees for the region.
During his three-day stay, Kellogg plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The new U.S. administration's approach is viewed with skepticism in Kyiv, especially following Trump's recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Just a week prior, Trump held a significant phone call with Putin, which lasted over an hour, without prior consultation with European allies. Following that conversation, Trump announced an immediate commencement of negotiations regarding Ukraine's future.
In a notable development, high-ranking delegations from the U.S. and Russia convened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking the first such meeting since the onset of the Ukraine conflict. However, President Zelenskyy was notably absent from these discussions, raising concerns among Ukrainian officials.
Trump's comments have also sparked controversy, as he has, in recent statements, suggested that Zelenskyy bears some responsibility for the Russian invasion, a remark seen as particularly provocative by Ukrainian officials. In response, Kellogg is working to clarify the administration's stance, emphasizing Trump's commitment to ending the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for three years. Kellogg stated that the President is aware of the human suffering and damage caused by the war.
The recent actions of Trump and his administration have generated anxiety among Ukraine's Western allies, who fear a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy that could distance the nation from Europe.
