Completion of U6 Line Renovation in Northern Berlin Delayed Until Summer 2027

The ongoing renovation of the U6 underground line in Berlin's northern districts is now expected to extend until mid-August 2027, much later than previously anticipated. The Berlin public transport authority (BVG) has explained that unforeseen challenges with the aging infrastructure are the primary reason for this significant delay.

The renovation project covers the stretch between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Alt-Tegel stations in the Reinickendorf area. Initially, the work was planned to be completed by spring 2025. However, comprehensive assessments conducted after the start of the project in November 2022 revealed that the nearly 70-year-old railway section required more extensive repairs than originally projected.

According to BVG, the initial plan involved targeted refurbishment of specific structures along the route. However, as bridges, station facilities, and embankments were exposed and examined, engineers discovered the need for a complete overhaul to ensure long-term safety and operational reliability of the line. The additional work required new planning stages, further extending the construction timeline.

Compounding the challenges, the previous winter brought severe weather conditions that caused multiple weeks of disruption to the construction schedule. These unanticipated interruptions delayed progress even further, as certain tasks could not be performed safely or effectively during periods of extreme cold.

Despite these setbacks, BVG reports that much of the heavy construction work is approaching completion. Significant portions of the track have already been rebuilt, and most station renovations are nearing their final stages. In the coming months, teams will focus on installing electrical and signal cables, setting up control and safety systems, and laying the remaining sections of rail. Following these technical installations, a series of test runs will be conducted to ensure the infrastructure meets all operational standards.

While the extended project timeline aims to provide lasting improvements, the prolonged closure has had a notable impact on local residents and businesses. The replacement bus services implemented during the shutdown have placed extra strain on Reinickendorf's roads and affected day-to-day activities, particularly for shop owners and restaurants situated along the affected corridor. Increased traffic congestion and reduced footfall have become ongoing concerns in the community.

BVG has stated that it is working closely with contractors and planners to streamline the remaining phases of construction and minimize further disruptions. The transport authority underlines that the decision to carry out a full renovation, rather than limited repairs, is intended to future-proof the U6 line and prevent additional major works in the foreseeable future. Once completed, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to deliver greater reliability, safety, and comfort for passengers travelling through northern Berlin.

The U6 is one of the city's key north-south underground lines, connecting multiple residential and commercial areas. The completion of this modernization project is anticipated to significantly enhance the efficiency of Berlin's public transit network upon reopening in August 2027.
