Trump considers nuclear arms talks with Putin and Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed openness to a possible trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss nuclear disarmament. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Trump stated that such a meeting among the world's prominent nuclear powers could be beneficial in addressing the issue of nuclear weapons. Trump indicated that he would also bring up other matters, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

The potential meeting is speculated to occur on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, this coming November. According to reports from U.S. media, the idea for such a gathering was proposed by Putin. However, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not confirmed any plans for the meeting. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that she currently has no information to disclose regarding Trump's comments.

As discussions about the nuclear disarmament meeting unfold, tensions with Ukraine have been highlighted by President Trump's recent remarks. Trump has criticized Ukraine for what he perceives as a lack of gratitude and reciprocity for U.S. support in its conflict with Russia. He suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky consider appointing someone else to lead negotiations for Ukraine. Trump’s comments come as the conflict in Ukraine continues, with the country defending itself against a Russian invasion that began in February 2022.

Ukrainian officials have voiced concerns over the prospect of such a trilateral meeting. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that including Russia in talks with the U.S. and China might encourage Russia to persist in its military actions. He asserted that Putin's presence at the negotiation table should be contingent upon genuine steps toward peace, such as committing to a ceasefire before any summit takes place.

The idea of Trump hosting a summit focused on nuclear disarmament coincides with his challenges on the international front. The possibility of a meeting amid current geopolitical tensions underscores the intricate nature of diplomatic relations involving these major nations. In spite of ongoing skepticism and concerns from different quarters, Trump continues to navigate global dialogues on issues ranging from arms control to conflicts in volatile regions.
