Authorities in Berlin-Kreuzberg have taken two individuals into custody on suspicion of bicycle theft following an incident in which several police officers sustained injuries. According to police reports, plainclothes officers observed three men attempting to break a bicycle lock during night hours.
After the lock was breached, two members of the group reportedly left the scene on stolen bicycles, while a third individual fled on foot. Law enforcement officials then identified themselves and moved to intercept the suspects. In the course of the operation, officers deployed irritant spray in an attempt to stop the escape.
One of the suspects resisted arrest, injuring an officer before managing to temporarily evade capture. However, police soon apprehended a 25-year-old suspect, who allegedly engaged in physical confrontation with the officers as they attempted to detain him. Reinforcements were called to the scene to assist in the apprehension process.
A second suspect, aged 22, also reportedly resisted arrest but was ultimately subdued and placed in custody. In total, five police officers suffered injuries as a result of the confrontation. The injured officers received treatment, though specifics regarding the severity of their injuries were not disclosed.
Both suspects are currently being held pending an appearance before an investigating judge, who will determine whether a formal arrest warrant will be issued. The third suspect remains at large, and authorities have launched an ongoing search to locate and apprehend this individual.
The Berlin police have reiterated their commitment to addressing property crimes such as bicycle theft, which remains a prevalent issue in many urban areas.
