Significant Stress Levels Among Americans: Survey Insights

A recent survey conducted by the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reveals troubling stress levels among U.S. adults. The study, which involved 1,005 participants, found that nearly 45% of respondents reported experiencing stress at least once a week due to news events or social media interactions. Alarmingly, one in six individuals indicated that they felt stressed every day.

Maryanna Klatt, Ph.D., who heads the Center for Integrative Health at Ohio State, emphasizes the importance of addressing stress, noting that while stress can be a natural response, it becomes problematic when it becomes chronic. She encourages individuals to channel their stress into constructive actions that enhance their well-being rather than diminish it.

Dr. Klatt, who specializes in mindfulness and yoga, has developed a program called Mindfulness in Motion aimed at reducing the risk of stress-related chronic illnesses through gentle yoga, mindfulness techniques, and calming music. She shares several strategies for managing stress effectively:

  • Engaging in physical activities, such as walking or exercising at the gym.
  • Spending quality time with friends, family, or pets to foster connection.
  • Taking breaks from social media to reduce information overload.
  • Connecting with nature to enhance mental clarity and well-being.

Dr. Klatt expressed satisfaction with the survey findings, which showed that a majority of participants recognized the need to manage their stress. Only 7% reported not taking any steps to alleviate their stress, indicating a general awareness of its impact on overall health.

Stress influences various facets of life, including physical health, mental outlook, and interpersonal relationships. Finding effective ways to manage stress can be challenging, but it is crucial for maintaining a balanced and healthy life. Dr. Klatt notes that the individuals who are most stressed can be difficult to be around, highlighting the importance of personal stress management.

The survey was conducted by SSRS using its Opinion Panel Omnibus platform, which is a nationally representative survey conducted bi-monthly. The data was collected between March 21 and March 24, 2025, and included both web and telephone responses. The margin of error for the survey results stands at +/- 3.7 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
