Petition Gains Momentum for Family Reservations on German Railways

In a significant move reflecting public sentiment, approximately 128,000 citizens have signed a petition advocating for the reinstatement of family reservations on Germany's national railway service, Deutsche Bahn. The initiative was spearheaded by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), a prominent transportation advocacy group. The petition has been formally submitted to Deutsche Bahn, highlighting the growing demand for this service.

Matthias Kurzeck, the chair of VCD, emphasized that this petition serves as a clear indication that the current service policies of Deutsche Bahn may not align with customer expectations. The call for the return of family reservations specifically targets long-distance train travel, where families previously could reserve multiple seats for a fixed fee. This option was eliminated in mid-June, prompting backlash from various organizations and political figures who advocate for family-friendly travel options.

Despite the criticism, Deutsche Bahn has maintained its stance, arguing that children under the age of 14 can still travel for free when accompanied by paying adults. However, the removal of the family reservation option has led to additional costs for families. Since the change, a family of four must now pay an extra EUR44 for seat reservations for both outbound and return journeys.

Kurzeck also pointed out that recently, the Federal Minister of Transport, Patrick Schnieder, unveiled an initiative aimed at enhancing customer satisfaction on the railways. He urged Deutsche Bahn and the ministry to take decisive action by reintroducing family reservations by the upcoming timetable change in December, thus addressing the concerns raised by the petitioners.

The future of the family reservation system remains uncertain as the public awaits a response from Deutsche Bahn regarding this significant push from the community.
