Romanian Fighter Jet Intercepts Explosive Drone Near Black Sea Gas Platform

A Romanian fighter jet shot down an explosive-laden drone near the Neptun Deep gas platform in the Black Sea, according to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of Defence. The incident unfolded in close proximity to the gas installation, where hundreds of personnel were on duty, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the region.

The Romanian Coast Guard initially identified the unmanned sea drone just a few hundred meters from the critical energy infrastructure. Authorities determined, after consultation with neighboring countries, that the drone did not originate from Ukraine. However, officials did not immediately disclose the drone's true origin.

Later in the day, a second drone was detected near the same offshore platform and was also neutralized. The Romanian Ministry of Defence activated a crisis management unit in response, coordinating actions with senior government officials. The decision to down the drones was made to ensure the safety of workers and the protection of vital energy assets. Two F-16 fighter jets were dispatched and successfully destroyed the first drone using onboard weaponry.

The recent incidents have drawn attention to an uptick in drone activity in the area, with Romanian authorities reporting multiple drone-related incursions in both maritime and airspace zones. On the night prior to the incident, a drone entered Romanian airspace near Galati, prompting a response from Spanish NATO jets and a Romanian Air Force helicopter. The drone ultimately crashed in an uninhabited area of Tulcea County. Earlier in the same week, a Spanish F-18 deployed as part of a NATO mission intercepted and destroyed a suspected Russian drone over Romania.

The Neptun Deep gas field, situated approximately 160 kilometers off the Romanian coast, is one of the nation's most significant energy projects. It is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Romania's domestic energy supply and reducing reliance on imported resources. As such, authorities have implemented heightened security measures around the platform to mitigate potential threats.

Sea drones, or unmanned surface vessels, operate remotely or autonomously and are capable of carrying out reconnaissance missions or delivering explosive payloads. These systems have been used in conflicts elsewhere, including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, due to their cost-effectiveness, stealth, and potential to target maritime infrastructure.

Romanian officials have condemned the increase in drone-related incidents, attributing responsibility for the escalation to Russian activities in the region. The events underscore persistent security challenges for Black Sea states and NATO members, particularly in safeguarding critical infrastructure against evolving technological threats.
