Police Respond to Explosions and Fatality in Northern Munich
Munich is currently witnessing a significant police and fire department operation in the northern region due to multiple explosions reported since early morning. Special units, including bomb disposal experts, have been deployed to the scene as authorities investigate a possible connection to the Oktoberfest, which has been temporarily closed.
According to reports, several explosions occurred in Munich, and gunfire was also reported. The fire department received an alarm around 4:40 AM regarding a residential building engulfed in flames, with several vehicles in the vicinity also set ablaze. Shortly after, emergency calls reported loud bangs.
A male body was discovered near the Lerchenauer See, exhibiting gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased had rigged his childhood home, located just five minutes away by car, with explosive devices before setting it on fire. The bomb disposal units are currently neutralizing the explosives found at the scene.
Authorities are particularly concerned about a backpack carried by the deceased, as it may contain additional explosives. Initially, police approached the area using helicopters to ensure safety. One other individual is reported missing, although authorities believe there is no threat from this person.
Images from the scene reveal a completely burned bus on the roadside, surrounded by a thick layer of firefighting foam. Vehicles in the surrounding streets have also been set on fire.
In a statement, a police spokesperson confirmed that investigations are ongoing in all directions but indicated that the circumstances appear to be linked to a familial context. It is believed that the suspect took his own life in the vicinity of the Lerchenauer See following the incident. Shortly before noon, heavily armed officers stormed the suspect's apartment in Starnberg, ensuring that it was free of any explosive devices before proceeding with their investigation.
Authorities are also exploring potential connections to the Oktoberfest. In an official statement, the police have noted that they are examining possible links to other locations in Munich, including the Theresienwiese, where the festival is held. As a precautionary measure, the city of Munich has announced that the Oktoberfest will remain closed until at least 5 PM, following the receipt of a letter from the suspect that has raised serious concerns.
The festival grounds are currently being searched, and festival staff have been instructed to leave the area and gather in designated safe zones. Additional security measures are being implemented, with police describing the situation as a "nonspecific bomb threat."
The police have cordoned off the vicinity of Lerchenauer Straße in northern Munich and are advising residents and motorists to avoid the area. Nearby schools, including the Toni-Pfülf Street Primary and Secondary School, are expected to remain closed for the day as investigations continue.
