Oktoberfest ride stalls leaving visitors suspended upside down
A malfunctioning ride left passengers suspended upside down for several minutes at the Oktoberfest in Munich on Saturday evening. The incident occurred on the 'Predator' ride, which came to an unexpected halt due to a technical issue, according to a spokesperson from the safety unit on-site.
The ride, which features a rotating platform and gondolas moving in opposite directions, stopped with the passengers about ten meters above ground. Videos shared online showed staff using ladders to reach the stranded visitors. The operator had to intervene quickly to ensure the safety of those on board, who were caught in an uncomfortable and unexpected position.
Witnesses reported that the ride's passengers predominantly consisted of young people, many of whom experienced dizziness and circulation issues after being rescued by staff. Fortunately, after a brief medical check, all affected individuals were deemed fit to return to the festival grounds. The on-site emergency services reported these symptoms but confirmed that no critical medical issues were involved.
The 'Predator' ride, described as one that tests the nerves of its riders, has been part of the Oktoberfest lineup since 2018. It reaches a maximum height of 16 meters and rotates at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. An expert from the fire department inspected the ride following the technical failure, and it was promptly cleared for use later that same evening.
The incident was part of a busy start to the 191st Oktoberfest, which began Saturday morning under clear skies. Guests arrived early to secure spots in the famous beer tents shortly after the gates opened at 9 a.m. Munich's Mayor Dominik Krause officiated the event's ceremonial opening by tapping the first beer keg with two strikes.
In addition to the ride stoppage, the festival's medical teams reported handling nearly 600 cases on opening night. Incidents requiring attention ranged from alcohol intoxication and circulatory problems to more serious injuries. Ten individuals underwent CT scans, and two were hospitalised for further observation.
The Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, presents a variety of attractions each year, with some garnering significant attention and stories that echo well beyond Munich. Despite the challenges posed by large crowds, the organizers aim to ensure the festival proceeds smoothly while prioritizing the safety and enjoyment of all guests.
