Nepal Imposes Restrictions on Major Social Media Platforms

The government of Nepal has taken the significant step of blocking access to 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Discord, and X, while TikTok remains unaffected by the restrictions.

This decision was made during a meeting of senior officials from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. Officials stated that the affected platforms failed to comply with registration regulations set by the government.

The move has drawn criticism from media representatives and human rights organizations, who argue that it represents an attempt to limit access to information and suppress freedom of expression. The ministry, however, contends that the companies did not adhere to a seven-day registration deadline provided by the government, leading to the immediate blockage of these platforms for users in Nepal.

The ban has left many residents in a difficult position, as numerous families rely on these platforms to maintain contact with relatives working and living abroad. Additionally, the abrupt nature of the blockade has put many businesses, particularly those in the tourism sector, in a state of upheaval.

In the capital city of Kathmandu, a demonstration took place where dozens of journalists voiced their opposition to the government's decision. Despite the backlash, the Nepalese government has emphasized that this action is not intended to restrict freedom of speech.
