Three Journalists Injured in Fretterode Incident, Suspects Released After Police Action
Authorities in the municipality of Fretterode in Thuringia are investigating an incident in which three journalists sustained injuries following an attack by two individuals. According to the Thuringian police, the journalists were subjected to physical violence, and it is suspected that an irritant substance may have been used during the confrontation. The journalists received medical attention for minor injuries at a local hospital.
Following the event, which occurred in the Eichsfeld district, the affected media representatives promptly alerted law enforcement. Police were able to apprehend the two suspected attackers, aged 56 and 22, shortly after the incident. However, after completion of police procedures, the suspects were released due to insufficient grounds for detention, as directed by the public prosecutor's office in Mühlhausen.
Preliminary information indicates that both suspects are believed to have links to the far-right scene. The investigation, now being jointly conducted by the Thuringian State Criminal Police Office and the Mühlhausen prosecutor's office, is focusing on charges of bodily harm. Authorities are still assessing whether the assault was politically motivated, and the specific details regarding the use of any irritant substance have not yet been confirmed.
During a subsequent search of the suspects' residences, police reported the discovery of several unrelated items, which are now in official custody. Details regarding these items have not been disclosed as the investigation remains ongoing.
Reports from the scene suggest that the injured parties were members of a 'Spiegel TV' team. One journalist involved acknowledged the confrontation, though further comment from the media outlet has not been provided at this time.
This is not the first instance of violence against journalists in Fretterode. In 2018, two men with alleged ties to the right-wing extremist community attacked journalists who were documenting a suspected gathering of neo-Nazis. Those individuals were convicted of property damage and aggravated bodily harm by the Mühlhausen District Court in 2022, but the Federal Court of Justice overturned the verdict in 2024 due to legal errors.
In the previous case, the journalists had been monitoring and photographing a meeting on the property of a known far-right leader when they were pursued by the perpetrators. The confrontation escalated after the journalists' vehicle was blocked, resulting in physical altercations and the theft of a camera.
The authorities in Thuringia are continuing to investigate the recent incident, with a focus on clarifying the circumstances and potential motivations behind the attack. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
