International Leaders Urge Russia for Genuine Peace Talks Ahead of Trump-Putin Call
As the phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin approaches, key leaders from Germany and other allied nations have intensified their appeal for Russia to engage sincerely in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. In a recent conference call that included heads of state from the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, and Italy, the need for an unconditional ceasefire was emphasized, along with the potential for sanctions against Russia if it fails to commit to meaningful dialogue.
The UK government spokesperson indicated that during this call, the leaders reiterated that Russia must take the peace talks seriously. Attendees included Friedrich Merz, Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This dialogue aims to discuss a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over three years.
Trump has expressed his objective of terminating the conflict and plans to speak with Putin on Monday. In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively engaging with international leaders, including a meeting with Pope Leo XIV, where he highlighted the Vatican's potential to facilitate direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
During these discussions, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the Pope's support and reiterated Ukraine's readiness for dialogue in any format that could yield tangible outcomes. He emphasized the importance of a complete and unconditional ceasefire, while also addressing the pressing need for new sanctions against Russia amid the ongoing attacks.
The recent escalation of hostilities has seen significant developments, including Ukraine reporting its largest drone assault from Russia since the onset of the war, resulting in civilian casualties in Kyiv. The Ukrainian air force acknowledged that more than 270 drones were deployed during this attack, which has heightened tensions in the region.
In light of these developments, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has asserted that the US is prepared to impose new sanctions if Russia does not make progress in peace discussions. He noted that there is significant bipartisan support within the US Congress for such measures if negotiations remain stagnant.
In conjunction with these efforts, Merz has indicated his intention to further consult with Trump and other leaders ahead of the anticipated call with Putin. He expressed hope for progress in achieving a resolution to the conflict.
As the situation evolves, the international community continues to monitor the dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, with an emphasis on achieving a just and lasting peace.
