Giant Pumpkins Dismantled at Annual Harvest Event in Klaistow

At a unique autumn event in Klaistow, located in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, massive pumpkins are being carefully cut open and processed. This follows the recent regional pumpkin weighing competition, where some of the largest pumpkins in the region were showcased. The highlight of this year's event is a colossal pumpkin grown by Michael Schade and Bernd Paul from Elsholz in Beelitz, which tipped the scales at an impressive 1,034.8 kilograms, setting a new local record.

The primary purpose of dismantling these giant pumpkins is to harvest their seeds, which are highly valued by cultivators for use as high-quality planting material in the next growing season. According to event organizers at the Spargelhof Klaistow, the seeds from these pumpkins are especially sought after due to their proven ability to produce exceptionally large fruit. The process of extracting the seeds is labor-intensive, often requiring two people and a large saw to handle the sheer size of the pumpkins.

Visitors to the event are invited to observe the dismantling process, which takes place over several hours. In addition to the seeds, attendees have the opportunity to take home portions of pumpkin flesh, while the majority of the remaining pumpkin is donated for animal feed. This sustainable approach ensures that nothing goes to waste and the community benefits from the harvest.

The recent weighing competition in Klaistow drew participation from 70 growers across Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony, and Bavaria, who entered a total of 74 pumpkins for consideration. The event marked a milestone as it was the first time a pumpkin exceeding 1,000 kilograms was weighed at the competition. The runner-up in the contest was Oliver Grafe from Großthiemig in Elbe-Elster, with a pumpkin weighing 988.2 kilograms. The diversity and scale of the entries underline the popularity and competitiveness of pumpkin cultivation in the region.

While the Klaistow event set a new regional record, the German national record for the heaviest pumpkin stands at 1,052 kilograms, held by a grower from Bavaria. On the international stage, the world record is held by a United States grower, whose pumpkin weighed an astonishing 1,247 kilograms, according to the organizers.

The annual pumpkin weighing and dismantling event in Klaistow has become a well-established tradition, drawing large crowds and fostering a sense of community among growers and visitors alike. It not only celebrates agricultural achievement but also highlights the importance of sustainable farming practices and the sharing of resources among local farmers. With each passing year, the event continues to inspire both seasoned and aspiring growers to push the boundaries of what is possible in pumpkin cultivation.

The event also serves as an educational experience for visitors, offering insights into the careful selection and cultivation of pumpkin seeds, as well as the challenges and rewards of growing record-breaking produce. As the pumpkins are dismantled and their seeds collected, preparations are already underway for the next season, with growers eager to see if future harvests will yield even more impressive results.
