German Residential Construction Sector Faces Sharp Decline in Confidence
The confidence within Germany's residential construction industry has deteriorated significantly, marking the steepest drop in sentiment observed in the past four years, according to recent findings by the Munich-based Ifo Institute. The latest economic survey conducted in April indicates a notable decline in industry morale, with the business climate index falling from minus 19.3 to minus 28.4 points. This marks the most substantial month-on-month decrease since April 2022, reflecting mounting pressures on the sector.
Despite the considerable fall, it is noted that the climate index in previous years--particularly throughout 2023 and 2024--recorded even lower values, at times reaching between minus 40 and minus 60 points. However, the current downturn is significant due to the rate of decline in a single period, highlighting renewed challenges facing the sector.

The survey indicates that 9.2 percent of companies reported material shortages in April, a marked increase compared to the previous two years, during which only about one percent of respondents cited such constraints. While the overall situation for ongoing projects has remained relatively stable, concerns persist regarding the volume of incoming orders. The proportion of companies reporting insufficient orders was largely unchanged at 43.8 percent, suggesting that demand has not improved. Additionally, the rate of order cancellations held steady at 10.8 percent, indicating ongoing uncertainty among clients and investors in committing to new projects.
