Extension of Forest Closures in Berlin Due to Storm Damage Cleanup
In the wake of severe storms, the Tegeler Forest and Spandauer Forst in Berlin will remain closed until at least August 18. This decision comes as cleanup efforts are taking longer than expected due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Authorities from the Berliner Forsten reported that the prolonged closure is necessary because the condition of the forest paths has deteriorated, making them difficult to navigate safely. Recent heavy rainfall has resulted in softened ground, which poses risks for both the cleanup crews and visitors. The safety of workers is a top priority, as the full extent of the cleanup required can only be assessed directly on-site.
In addition to the challenges posed by the weather, the cleanup operation has revealed that the volume of work is greater than initially anticipated. Areas that are particularly affected include paths obscured by fallen trees and branches, which require careful removal to avoid further safety hazards.
While the majority of the forest remains off-limits, certain areas have been reopened to the public. These include swimming spots at Tegeler See, dog walking areas in Frohnau and Halenfelde, and several forest playgrounds. Updates regarding additional openings will be provided on the official website of the Berliner Forsten.
Officials are urging the public to adhere to the closure notices in place. Entering the restricted areas poses significant dangers due to unstable trees, hanging branches, and unsecured storm debris. The saturated soil increases the likelihood of unexpected tree falls, as weakened trees may collapse under the added weight of rain-soaked foliage.
As cleanup efforts continue, the Berliner Forsten are committed to ensuring the safety of both the public and the crews involved in restoring the forests. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the situation and to respect the closures until it is deemed safe to return.
