Wie Bilder erzählen: Storytelling von Albrecht Altdorfer bis Peter Paul Rubens

Alte Pinakothek

A reunion with familiar faces alongside rarely shown discoveries: This collection presentation features works from the fields of Old German and Early Netherlandish as well as Flemish painting of the 16th and early 17th centuries, promising a few surprises.

Different aspects of a theme that is central to painting will be illuminated: the art of storytelling. How, what, and by whom are stories told? What purposes do artists and patrons pursue at different times, and who is their intended audience? Is this always clear, or are viewers sometimes intentionally misled? This presentation raises these and other questions, revealing that often, things are not what they seem at first glance.
