Early Morning Attack on LGBTQ Anti-Violence Initiative in Berlin
In a troubling escalation of violence, the Maneo anti-violence project, which supports the LGBTQ community in Berlin, has been targeted for the second time in a week. The latest incident occurred in the early hours, around 3:40 AM, when unknown assailants vandalized a door and window at the project's premises located in the diverse Schöneberg district.
A witness alerted the police after hearing the sound of breaking glass and seeing two individuals fleeing the scene. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a stone on the ground, which appeared to have been used to break the windows. The state criminal police's political crime unit has since launched an investigation into the incident.
Maneo has been providing essential support, including victim assistance and violence prevention services, to gay, lesbian, and other sexual minorities for decades. This recent act of vandalism follows a similar attack that took place on September 28, highlighting a concerning pattern of aggression against the project.
According to reports from Maneo, there has been a significant increase in attacks in recent weeks. Instances of property damage are on the rise, with the entrance door being repeatedly vandalized and the entrance sign deliberately removed. Staff members have also faced homophobic slurs and threats, underscoring the hostile environment that LGBTQ organizations are currently navigating.
The rise in violence against LGBTQ initiatives like Maneo raises alarms about the safety and acceptance of sexual minorities in Berlin. As investigations continue, community leaders and advocates are calling for greater protection and awareness regarding these incidents, urging authorities to take decisive actions to safeguard vulnerable populations.
