German Retailer dm to Introduce Cardiovascular Health Screenings
German drugstore chain dm is planning to expand its range of health-related services by offering in-store cardiovascular health screenings. The company aims to address cardiovascular diseases, which remain one of the leading causes of mortality in Germany. According to dm's management, advancements in sensor technology now make it possible to accurately capture vital health data with minimal effort. For example, customers may soon be able to undergo assessments simply by entering a dedicated booth while fully clothed.
While a precise launch date for the new cardiovascular screening service has not been disclosed, dm has indicated intentions to roll out the offering within the current calendar year. Details regarding potential partnerships for the implementation of these screenings remain under consideration.
This development is part of dm's broader strategy to strengthen its position in the healthcare sector. The retailer has previously made forays into the pharmaceutical market, including the distribution of over-the-counter (OTC) medications through its online pharmacy based in the Czech Republic. However, regulations currently prevent the sale of prescription medications from this location, and dm has stated there are no immediate plans to expand into that segment.
Last year, dm began piloting a selection of health services in certain stores, such as skin and blood analyses as well as eye screenings. The company is currently preparing to expand its eye screening program, increasing the number of participating branches from eight to thirty. The initiative will target both urban and rural areas, particularly regions with limited access to ophthalmologists. Renovations to accommodate these services in additional stores are scheduled for late August and September.
The blood analysis program has been temporarily suspended, but it has demonstrated significant demand among customers. dm has expressed plans to further develop and potentially bring the service fully in-house. Efforts are also underway to improve the referral process for customers seeking online dermatological consultations following in-store skin examinations.
dm's growing focus on preventive health services reflects a trend among major retailers in Germany to diversify their portfolios and offer greater convenience for customers seeking non-emergency health screenings.
