DJI Enters E-Bike Supply Market, Competing with Bosch

DJI, known for its drone technology, has made a significant foray into the e-bike sector, showcasing its Avinox motor at the recent Eurobike event in Frankfurt. This innovative motor has been adopted by seven different manufacturers, including Commencal, Velo de Ville, and Rotwild, marking a notable expansion beyond its initial focus on high-end mountain bikes.

The Avinox motor, which boasts a powerful output of 120 Nm, has been recognized for its robust performance in hill-climbing scenarios, outpacing established competitors such as Bosch and Shimano in previous tests. Until now, this motor was exclusively featured in premium electric mountain bikes, including models from DJI itself. However, the latest announcements reveal that the Avinox system is now available in a broader range of bicycles, catering to a wider audience.

Among the new models presented at Eurobike, many continue to focus on the mountain bike segment, with brands like Commencal, Crestline, Forbidden, Megamo, and Rotwild now integrating DJI's system, which includes the motor, battery, display unit, and accompanying app.

The Avinox drive system has received acclaim not only for its raw power but also for its impressive automatic support features, rapid charging capabilities, and a comprehensive app that tracks performance metrics. This app provides users with various customization options, including a built-in navigation system and an anti-theft feature. Notably, unlike Bosch's offerings, DJI does not require users to purchase a subscription for its theft protection services.

One standout model from Velo de Ville is the Revo-C, a city bike that diverges from the mountain bike trend. Weighing in at 19.9 kilograms and equipped with fenders and a rear rack, this bicycle includes a 600-Wh battery that can be charged from 0 to 75 percent in just 90 minutes. The lightweight DJI motor, weighing only 2.52 kilograms, can deliver up to 1000 watts in boost mode, achieving a maximum torque of 120 Newton meters. Even without engaging the boost function, the motor maintains a substantial torque of 105 Newton meters, effectively handling steep inclines with ease.

During a brief test ride on the Frankfurt Messegelände, the combination of the lightweight city bike and the powerful motor demonstrated impressive acceleration and handling, promising a dynamic riding experience. The pricing for the Velo de Ville Revo-C is set to start at EUR3,999, making it an attractive option in the growing e-bike market.
