Deutsche Bahn Launches New Security Measures for Train Staff Amid Rising Attacks

Deutsche Bahn has implemented a comprehensive security initiative aimed at enhancing the protection of its employees following recent violent incidents involving train staff. The campaign, which is being rolled out in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Transport and the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), seeks to foster greater respect towards railway employees and increase their safety during daily operations.

The need for improved security measures became particularly urgent after a fatal incident earlier this year, in which a train conductor lost his life following an attack by a fare evader in Rhineland-Palatinate. This event drew nationwide attention to the risks faced by rail personnel and prompted calls for immediate action from both the public and government officials.

As part of the initiative, Deutsche Bahn has introduced new posters and messages across stations and trains, encouraging passengers to treat staff with dignity and respect. Recent reports have underscored the persistent dangers train staff face. In a notable event, a train conductor was threatened with a knife by a passenger traveling without a valid ticket. The incident occurred aboard an Intercity Express (ICE) between Munich and Hamburg. The suspect, who failed to present identification or a valid ticket during a routine inspection, allegedly brandished a knife ahead of the train's arrival in Hanover. Federal police responded swiftly, apprehending the individual and confiscating the weapon at the station. Furthermore, a fine is being considered due to the violation of the station's knife-carrying prohibition.

Currently, approximately 2,000 body cameras are in use throughout the company, with plans to expand coverage.
