Tragic Accident at Lake Constance: Child Fatally Struck by Train at Railway Crossing

A serious accident occurred in Sipplingen, a small town near Lake Constance, when a four-year-old girl was fatally injured after being struck by a train at a railway crossing. The incident took place as the child, riding a balance bike, attempted to cross the tracks despite the barriers already being closed.

According to information from the police, the accident happened in the town center, where the railway crossing is equipped with half-barriers. These barriers only block one direction of traffic, leaving the opposite lane open. Despite the activation of the safety mechanism and the barriers in place, the girl entered the crossing. A regional express train, unable to halt in time despite the immediate application of emergency brakes, struck the child.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. The child sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital by rescue helicopter. Despite medical intervention, the girl succumbed to her injuries later that night.

At the time of the incident, the child's parents were reportedly nearby. Police did not provide further details regarding their proximity or the precise circumstances leading up to the accident. Around 65 passengers were aboard the train, none of whom suffered physical injuries. However, psychological support was offered to the family, train passengers, railway staff, and other witnesses present at the scene.

Railway company representatives expressed deep condolences to the family and confirmed that, following standard protocol, a crisis manager was dispatched to support the train personnel. After such incidents, locomotive operators are relieved from duty and sent home to recover from the trauma.

Following the accident, emergency responders erected privacy screens around the site and began a thorough investigation, which included surveying and documenting the scene. The regional train involved in the accident came to a stop just a few meters beyond the crossing, while an adjacent street was closed off to allow emergency vehicles and first responders to operate without obstruction.

Sipplingen, with a population of approximately 8,000, is located about five kilometers west of Überlingen on the northern shore of Lake Constance. The event has deeply affected both the local community and all those involved.

Authorities continue to investigate the sequence of events that led to this tragic accident, with a particular focus on the safety measures at railway crossings and their effectiveness in preventing similar incidents in the future.
