Fatal Tour Bus Accident Claims Five Lives in New York

A tragic accident occurred on an interstate highway in western New York on Friday, resulting in the death of five passengers aboard a tour bus. The bus was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls and was carrying 54 individuals when it crashed shortly before 12:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 90 in Pembroke, approximately 25 miles east of Buffalo.

Authorities reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle after becoming distracted, leading to the bus rolling onto its side. The incident involved passengers ranging in age from 1 to 74 years old, with several individuals ejected from the bus during the crash. All five fatalities, which occurred at the scene, were adults. Many others were trapped inside the wreckage and required rescue operations.

State police, represented by Major Andre Ray, confirmed that multiple individuals were taken to various hospitals for treatment, though it appears that no other passengers sustained life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation has ruled out mechanical failure and driver impairment as contributing factors, and the driver, who survived the crash, is cooperating with authorities. As of the latest updates, no charges have been filed against the driver.

Emergency services responded promptly, with helicopters from Mercy Flight and other medical transport services flying victims to nearby hospitals. Reports indicated that over 40 individuals were evaluated or treated for injuries ranging from head trauma to broken limbs. Two passengers requiring surgery are expected to recover, as stated by medical personnel at Erie County Medical Center.

The bus involved in the accident was owned by M&Y Tour Inc., based in Staten Island. Regulatory records show that the company holds a satisfactory safety rating and has not experienced accidents or fatalities in the past two years. Inspections conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration revealed no issues with the company's buses or drivers during that time.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with glass and personal belongings scattered across the highway. The New York State Thruway Authority reported that a significant section of the roadway was closed in both directions following the accident, although the westbound lanes were reopened later in the day.

In light of this tragic event, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and emphasized the need for support for the victims and their families. The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, as officials continue to gather information about the incident.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are urging the public to remain compassionate and respectful towards those affected by this devastating tragedy.
