Former Ravens Defensive Lineman Arthur Jones Passes Away at 39
Arthur Jones, a notable defensive lineman who contributed to the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl victory, has passed away at the age of 39. His alma mater, Syracuse University, announced his death, which occurred on Friday morning. The cause of death has not been disclosed by either the university or the Ravens organization.
Jones was selected by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft and played with the team for his first four seasons. During his time in Baltimore, he made a significant impact on the field, achieving 8.5 of his career total of 10 sacks during a standout two-year period between 2012 and 2013. Notably, he played a crucial role in the Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII win against the San Francisco 49ers, where he recorded a sack on quarterback Colin Kaepernick, moments before a power outage interrupted the game.
Following his tenure with the Ravens, Jones continued his career with the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons before concluding his NFL journey with the Washington Football Team in 2017. Throughout his college career at Syracuse, he established himself as an exceptional player, holding the school record for tackles for loss by an interior defensive lineman with 38.5. He was recognized as a first-team All-Big East selection during his final two seasons.
Jones was also known for his positive demeanor and uplifting spirit. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta highlighted his infectious energy and the profound impact he had on those around him. Syracuse's athletic director, John Wildhack, echoed these sentiments, describing Jones as a remarkable player and an even better person, emphasizing his ongoing support for the university's football program after his professional career.
Jones is survived by his brothers, including Jon Jones, a former UFC heavyweight champion, and Chandler Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler who also won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. His legacy extends beyond the football field, reflecting a life dedicated to uplifting others and contributing positively to his community.
