Brandenburg Increases Funding for Sorbian and Wendish Cultural Preservation
Brandenburg has announced a significant increase in financial support dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Sorbian and Wendish culture and language. The Sorbs and Wends, a recognized minority group residing primarily in Brandenburg and Saxony, have deep historical roots in the region, maintaining their unique customs and traditions for centuries.
According to official reports, the Brandenburg state government has decided to raise its annual contribution to the Foundation for the Sorbian People. The funding provided by Brandenburg will rise from approximately 3.9 million euros in the previous year to nearly 4.9 million euros in the current year. By 2030, the state's annual financial support is projected to grow to close to 5.5 million euros, ensuring the sustainability of cultural programs and language initiatives for the Sorbian and Wendish communities.
The Foundation for the Sorbian People is a collaborative effort, jointly financed by the federal government and the states of Brandenburg and Saxony. The latest agreement outlines a revised funding structure: the federal government will cover half of the foundation's budget, Saxony will contribute about one-third, and Brandenburg will provide around 17 percent. This arrangement is expected to be formally ratified in the coming weeks, following a decision by the Brandenburg cabinet.
The strengthened commitment follows requests from the minister presidents of Brandenburg and Saxony, who appealed to the federal government for renewed support as the previous funding agreement was set to expire at the end of 2025. Their efforts aimed to secure long-term stability for the foundation, which plays a pivotal role in supporting cultural, educational, and linguistic projects across the region, particularly in Upper and Lower Lusatia.
The Sorbian and Wendish communities, descendants of Slavic peoples who settled in the area roughly 1,500 years ago, are recognized for their vibrant traditions, distinct language, and cultural heritage.
