Biontech's Gotistobart Extends Survival in Lung Cancer Study
Biotechnology company Biontech and its partner, US firm OncoC4, have reported promising results from a clinical trial of a new drug aimed at treating advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The study, concerning a drug called Gotistobart, showed a significant extension of survival time in patients suffering from a particular type of this lung cancer, known as squamous cell carcinoma, who had exhausted other treatment options.
In the initial phase of the Phase-3 clinical trial, patients treated with the antibody Gotistobart experienced a median overall survival of 18.5 months. In contrast, those in the control group receiving the standard chemotherapy drug, Docetaxel, had a median survival of 10 months, the companies announced. This study focuses on patients whose disease progressed after previous immunotherapy and chemotherapy, marking a significant development in the treatment of this difficult-to-treat group.
Biontech's announcement highlighted that there have been limited advancements in treatment options for this particular patient group over the last decade. In fact, Biontech noted that several other Phase-3 studies in this area have failed recently. In cases where the immune system is depleted and tumors have developed resistance, patients are often left with few options beyond chemotherapy or palliative care. Current survival rates at this disease stage are typically less than one year.
Study leader Rama Balaraman expressed optimism, suggesting that if the survival advantage is confirmed in the ongoing portion of the approval-relevant trial, the results could potentially overturn existing standard treatment practices. This second part of the study is currently underway in over 160 centers worldwide, indicating a broad interest and hope for progress in clinical circles.
Gotistobart functions as an antibody targeting the CTLA-4 immune receptor. It aims to reduce regulatory T cells around the tumor, thereby reactivating the body's immune response against the cancer. In terms of safety, severe side effects were reported in 44.4% of patients treated with Gotistobart, while 48.8% of patients in the chemotherapy group experienced severe side effects, suggesting a comparable safety profile between the new treatment and existing options.
Lung cancer remains a critical research focus for Biontech. The company is actively exploring various approaches across more than 16 clinical studies targeting different subtypes of the disease. Biontech's broader research efforts reflect a dedication to advancing treatment options for cancer patients, a commitment that has already been demonstrated through their work on vaccines and other therapeutic solutions.
While still early, the results of the Gotistobart study present a potentially transformative step in treating advanced lung cancer.
