Five Police Officers Injured During Arrest of Suspected Bicycle Thieves in Berlin-Kreuzberg
In Berlin-Kreuzberg, five police officers sustained injuries while attempting to apprehend individuals suspected of stealing bicycles. The incident occurred late Thursday evening when undercover officers from Berlin's Police Directorate 5 (City) observed three men tampering with bicycle locks at a bike parking area on Adalbertstraße.
According to police reports, the suspects--a 22-year-old, a 25-year-old, and an unidentified third person--were seen breaking at least one lock. Following the initial observation, the 25-year-old and the unidentified accomplice fled the scene on two bicycles, while the 22-year-old left on foot.
Shortly after, the undercover officers revealed their identities and tried to intercept the two suspects riding the stolen bicycles near a nearby park. The officers deployed irritant gas in an effort to halt their advance. The unidentified suspect fell during the attempt, resisted an officer, and managed to escape the area. The 25-year-old was briefly detained but responded with significant physical resistance and managed to evade custody temporarily.
One officer pursued the 25-year-old suspect using a police bicycle and was able to catch up with him, requesting immediate support. Additional officers arrived at the scene, and together they attempted to arrest the suspect. During the confrontation, the 25-year-old allegedly struck the officers multiple times with his fists as they tried to restrain him.
Meanwhile, the officer who had given chase also located the 22-year-old suspect. The apprehension of this individual required the efforts of three officers due to his considerable resistance. Both the 22-year-old and the 25-year-old were eventually subdued and placed in police custody.
Throughout these events, five police officers suffered injuries as a result of the suspects' resistance and physical attacks. Both detained individuals are currently being held and will be presented before an investigative court for possible issuance of arrest warrants. The third suspect remains at large, and police investigations are ongoing to determine his identity and whereabouts.
Bicycle theft remains a persistent concern in Berlin, particularly in neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg. Authorities continue to implement targeted operations and increase patrols in areas with high rates of theft. The police urge residents to report suspicious activities and take preventive measures to secure their bicycles.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and efforts to locate the third suspect continue.
