Berlin's Mohrenstraße Set for Renaming on August 23
In a significant move following extensive discussions and legal challenges, Berlin's Mohrenstraße in the Mitte district is scheduled to be renamed on August 23. This change marks a pivotal moment for advocates who have long pushed for the revision of the street's name due to its association with outdated and potentially offensive terminology.
The new name, Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße, honors Anton Wilhelm Amo, an 18th-century scholar of African descent who made notable contributions during his time in Berlin. Tahir Della, a representative from the initiative 'Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland' (Black People in Germany), expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming celebration linked to the renaming.
The movement to rename the street has been supported by the Green Party-led district administration of Mitte, alongside various community organizations. The term "Mohr," historically used in the street's name, has been criticized for its racial connotations, prompting calls for change.
Although a general decree for the renaming was published in May 2021, the process faced delays due to legal disputes initiated by local residents. These residents contended that the original intent behind the street's name was respectful, reflecting a historical perspective rather than one of racism. They argued that many street names embody complex histories that warrant explanation rather than alteration.
Recently, the Oberverwaltungsgericht Berlin-Brandenburg (Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg) ruled in favor of the renaming, thereby clearing the way for the change. As part of the transition, the district office plans to notify residents of the street via an information letter. Residents will be offered priority appointments at the local citizens' office to update their identification documents and vehicle registrations, with no associated costs, as confirmed by a district spokesperson.
Additionally, the Berlin public transportation authority (BVG) has announced that the nearby U-Bahn station named Mohrenstraße will also receive a new designation in line with the street's renaming.
