Lightning Strikes in Bavaria Exceed 2025 Levels, But Remain Lower Than Previous Years Due to Missing Storm Factors

Bavaria has recorded a notable increase in lightning strikes this year compared to 2025, yet overall numbers remain below historical averages. According to data from the lightning information services Aldis and Blids, the total count of lightning strikes in Bavaria recently surpassed 30,000, overtaking last year's final tally. Despite this increase, figures still trail behind those observed in 2023 and 2024, when lightning activity in the state was significantly higher.

Recent monitoring indicates that on a single day earlier this week, over 200 lightning strikes were registered in Bavaria, pushing the annual total just above the previous year's figure of 30,096. The current count stands at 30,149, a slight increase but still far from the high points of recent years. In 2023 and 2024, lightning strikes totaled 55,692 and 56,664 respectively, highlighting a considerable decline in 2026's thunderstorm activity.

Thunderstorm frequency and lightning occurrences are largely influenced by the combination of heat and atmospheric moisture. Years with elevated temperatures but low humidity often result in fewer thunderstorms and, consequently, lower lightning counts. The ongoing trend this year is attributed to the absence of sufficient moisture, a critical factor that typically fuels the formation of strong thunderstorms in the region.

Across Germany, the pattern varies. Nationally, the total number of lightning strikes had already surpassed the 2025 figure by the end of July, reaching 119,574 incidents. This marks an increase of nearly 20,000 compared to the previous year. However, certain federal states, including Bavaria, have not matched the pace of other regions. Most German states exceeded their prior-year lightning totals earlier in the season, apart from Bavaria, Hessen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, and Thuringia.

Historically, Bavaria accounts for about a quarter of all lightning strikes in Germany, a proportion that reflects the state's unique topography, especially near the Alpine foothills. These geographical features are known to encourage thunderstorm development, resulting in a higher incidence of lightning compared to the state's share of Germany's total land area.

The most lightning-intensive day in Bavaria in 2026 so far was June 29, when over 2,500 incidents were recorded. The figures provided by Aldis and Blids focus exclusively on cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, counting each event as a single instance, even if the lightning flashes multiple times. Differences in measurement and reporting methods may lead to slight variations in recorded totals.

As the main thunderstorm season in Bavaria typically concludes by mid-August, the likelihood of matching previous years' higher figures remains low. Experts attribute the subdued lightning activity to limited atmospheric moisture, underscoring the importance of both heat and humidity in generating active thunderstorm conditions.
