ASML Plans Significant Investment in Mistral AI to Enhance Digital Sovereignty

ASML, a leading European technology company, is reportedly planning to invest EUR1.3 billion in the French artificial intelligence firm Mistral AI, positioning itself as the largest shareholder. This strategic move is expected to include a seat on Mistral's supervisory board, according to sources cited by Reuters.

The investment is seen as a pivotal step towards strengthening Europe's digital sovereignty and could elevate Mistral AI to become the continent's most valuable AI company. Despite the significance of this development, neither ASML nor Mistral AI has publicly commented on the report.

As part of its next funding round, Mistral AI aims to raise EUR1.7 billion, which would bring its total valuation to approximately EUR10 billion. ASML is expected to contribute the majority of this funding. Recent reports suggest that Mistral is even exploring avenues to achieve a valuation of EUR12 billion through external financing. Founded in 2023, Mistral AI was previously valued at nearly EUR6 billion during its last funding round in 2024.

ASML specializes in lithography systems that are crucial for semiconductor manufacturing, serving major clients such as TSMC, Samsung, Intel, Globalfoundries, and UMC, along with Chinese manufacturers like SMIC. The company is the sole global producer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, making it one of Europe's most strategically important and valuable enterprises.

The motivations behind ASML's planned investment in Mistral have not been detailed in the reports, but it is noted that the company is receiving advice from the Bank of America and could enhance its operations through AI technologies.
