Ansbach station awarded 'Station of the Year' in Germany
The Ansbach railway station in Bavaria has been recognized as 'Station of the Year 2026' by a jury of transport and tourism experts. The accolade comes after the station's extensive post-war modernizations, which transformed it into one of Germany's 'future stations' by the end of 2024.
The station, located in the town of Ansbach with a population of approximately 41,000, impressed the nine-member jury with its bright and welcoming atmosphere. The jury highlighted the distinctive design of the waiting hall, featuring curved wooden benches and elegant ceiling lights, which set it apart from the typical metal seating and bland halls found in many other stations.
According to the German transportation alliance, Allianz pro Schiene e.V., which conferred the award, the Ansbach station also stands out for its excellent service offerings. It has become the eighth station in Bavaria to receive this title, reflecting a commitment to enhancing passenger experience through thoughtful design and service innovation.
The exterior of the station, a straightforward post-war construction accented with turquoise elements, was lauded by the jury as "square, practical, and well-considered." Inside, travelers are greeted by a well-lit waiting area featuring a contemporary aesthetic. The comprehensive renovation included upgrading platforms and underpasses to ensure they provide barrier-free access for everyone.
The jury also praised the station's strong connectivity, noting its location directly in front of the bus terminal, offering quick transfers for travelers. Additionally, the station provides various parking options for cars and storage for bicycles, enhancing its appeal as a hub for commuters.
However, the panel recognized areas where improvements could be made. The underpass, while clean, lacks decorative elements, and the station does not yet offer real-time bus departure information. The jury also recommended implementing a station-wide Wi-Fi network to further improve the passenger experience.
