Airbus A350 Sets New Record for Longest Nonstop Flight

An Airbus A350-1000ULR has successfully completed what is believed to be the longest nonstop flight ever performed by a large passenger aircraft, covering more than 23,000 kilometers. The journey began in Melbourne, Australia, with a team comprising five pilots and seven engineers, and concluded in Toulouse, France, after a total flight time of 24 hours and 24 minutes.

This milestone surpasses the previous record set by a Boeing 777-200LR in 2005, which flew from Hong Kong to London in 22 hours and 42 minutes. The Airbus team awaits official confirmation of the new record, but the achievement demonstrates significant advancements in long-haul aviation capabilities.

The record-setting flight was conducted as part of a test program for Qantas' 'Project Sunrise'. This initiative is focused on launching ultra long-haul routes, with the Australian airline having ordered twelve specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. These planes are designed to operate non-stop flights from Sydney to London and, subsequently, Sydney to New York, routes that were previously unfeasible due to range limitations of existing passenger jets.

To make these extended flights possible, Airbus equipped the aircraft with an enlarged fuel tank, providing the necessary range. The test flights are required for regulatory certification of the new aircraft variant. Preparations for passenger service include adjustments to cabin configuration, with Qantas planning to install fewer seats compared to typical long-haul layouts. This approach aims to enhance comfort for travelers on journeys potentially lasting up to 20 hours, depending on wind conditions and other operational factors.

Project Sunrise draws its name from the historic 'Kangaroo Route' of the 1940s, where pilots witnessed multiple sunrises during slow crossings over the Indian Ocean. The recent test flight recreated this experience, with the crew observing two sunsets and two sunrises during their journey across multiple continents and time zones.

The planned route for the record attempt initially included a transpacific leg from Melbourne to Santiago de Chile, a crossing over South America to Buenos Aires, and then an Atlantic segment toward Europe. However, due to forecasted unfavorable tailwinds, the flight plan was adjusted. The aircraft ultimately traveled from Melbourne to Los Angeles before crossing the Atlantic to Toulouse, combining two of the world's longest intercontinental routes into a single continuous journey.

Throughout the flight, the crew adhered to standard long-haul cockpit rotation schedules, with pilots alternating every four hours to maintain alertness and safety. The team also monitored fuel use, atmospheric conditions, and aircraft performance to collect essential data for the certification process and future commercial operations.

Qantas, collaborating with scientists, has also focused on optimizing lighting and rest schedules within the cabin to reduce jet lag and improve passenger well-being during ultra long-haul flights. These innovations are designed to address the challenges of extended air travel and set new standards for comfort on intercontinental journeys.
