Nornickel received international certification of cobalt production for first time

The Finnish division of the giant Norilsk Nickel, located in the province of Satakunta, in the city of Harjavalta, has received international certification for the production of cobalt, the company said in a press release.

Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy was audited in November 2020 as part of the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) under the RMI Cobalt Refiner Due Diligence Standard. This step was designed to strengthen Nornickel's commitment to responsible cobalt supply. In March 2022, the facility was included in the list of RMI-compliant refineries.

Responsible Business Alliance and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, the Responsible Minerals Initiative founded in 2008.
RMI provide companies with tools and resources to make sourcing decisions that improve regulatory compliance and support responsible sourcing of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

Compliance of the Finnish company with the Cobalt Due Diligence Standard for Cobalt Producers indicates that the criticisms raised during the initial RMAP assessment were sufficiently addressed, and during the re-assessment, no violations of the requirements for responsible suppliers were identified during the re-assessment.

Cobalt is used in the production of heat-resistant, superhard, wear-resistant, tool alloys. Such materials are widely used in aviation, machine and rocket building, nuclear and electrical industries, and, more recently, in the production of electric vehicles.
