Verdi Calls for Nationwide Strike Affecting Mail and Package Delivery

Thu 6th Feb, 2025

Bonn/Berlin - In an effort to intensify pressure during ongoing wage negotiations, the labor union Verdi has announced a one-day strike affecting mail and package deliveries across various locations in Germany. This strike is aimed at both letter carriers and parcel delivery workers, including those who deliver both types of shipments.

This marks the sixth day of warning strikes initiated by Verdi since last week. Previous strikes have resulted in a minimal disruption, affecting a small percentage of total mail volume. Consequently, some deliveries may experience delays of one to two days.

Verdi's strike call comes as negotiations between the union and Deutsche Post management are set to resume in the near future. The union is advocating for a 7% wage increase along with additional vacation days to help employees cope with increasing workloads. In total, Verdi is seeking four extra days off for its members.

In contrast, Deutsche Post has expressed concerns regarding the financial viability of these demands, citing the need for significant investments and a decline in mail volumes due to the rise of digital communication, which they argue limits their capacity for wage increases.

The ongoing negotiations are set to continue next Wednesday, February 12, when representatives from both sides will reconvene to discuss potential resolutions to the dispute.
