The two-day warning strike by the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) has officially concluded, with services expected to gradually resume as of 3:00 AM. While the strike has ended, the public is advised that transportation may remain irregular for several hours as operations normalize.
This strike marked the longest interruption in the ongoing wage negotiations, lasting a full 48 hours. During the strike on Thursday and Friday, all U-Bahn, tram, and the majority of bus services were halted, forcing commuters to seek alternative modes of transportation. Notably, S-Bahn trains and regional services were not affected by the strike.
The strike was called by the Verdi union in response to stalled negotiations regarding wages and working conditions for BVG employees. Union representatives have expressed that the strike was crucial in showing the city's transport operators the determination of their workforce to secure better pay and improved working conditions.
In the aftermath of the strike, BVG officials have stated their commitment to addressing the issues raised by employees as they move forward in negotiations. They acknowledged the significant inconvenience caused to commuters during the strike and are working diligently to restore full service.
As the situation stabilizes, future strikes may still be on the horizon as negotiations continue. Both the BVG and Verdi have indicated that discussions will resume shortly, with the aim of reaching a resolution that satisfies both parties.
