Prague - A bus driver posed a significant risk to the lives of 19 passengers while operating his vehicle under the influence, registering a staggering blood alcohol content of 3.78. Fortunately, two vigilant witnesses intervened, preventing what could have been a catastrophic incident.
On a Monday afternoon, as the bus traveled from Brno to Uherské Hradiste, the driver exhibited erratic behavior, swerving between lanes. The concerned witnesses, noticing the dangerous driving, managed to position their vehicle in front of the bus to monitor the driver's condition.
After observing the bus driver's alarming state, the women guided the bus to a nearby gas station in Slavkov. However, the driver collided with a waste container upon arrival. The witnesses rushed to the bus to check on the passengers, who were fortunately unharmed. It was then that they detected the strong smell of alcohol emanating from the driver.
One of the women, aged 26, promptly notified the police about the situation. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and conducted a breathalyzer test on the 52-year-old driver. The result shocked even the seasoned officers: a blood alcohol level of 3.78. The driver admitted to consuming vodka, with nearly a full bottle discovered in the bus next to his seat.
Authorities acted swiftly, removing the driver from operation and ensuring the safety of the passengers. None of the individuals on board suffered any injuries and were subsequently transferred to another bus operated by a sober driver.
This incident underscores the critical importance of responsible driving, particularly in public transport, where the safety of numerous individuals is at stake. The driver now faces severe legal repercussions, including the potential for up to five years in prison for endangering public safety and driving under the influence.
