The medicine in your kitchen cabinet: Ginger

Listed as one of the most effective natural home remedies, ginger is packed with essential nutrients and rejuvenating compounds. It has been used for its health benefits for over 5000 years and is a favourite medicinal as well as culinary herb. A slice of ginger is said to contain eighteen amino acids in addition to a wide array of vitamins, chemicals, and minerals. For this reason, ginger is beneficial in a multitude of different ways.

Ginger can settle an upset stomach or treat severe stomach ailments such as dyspepsia or colic. It is also used to treat diarrhoea. It provides relief for bloating and gas. It contains special enzymes responsible for catalyzing the proteins in your food, thus aiding in digestion and the prevention of cramps. It is used to ease the digestion process.

The root, which contains anti-viral, anti-toxic, and anti-fungal properties is used for the prevention of and treatment against the common cold. It helps stimulate the secretion of mucus, reducing the cough and a scratchy throat.  Due to its promotion of mucus secretion, ginger protects against the development of ulcers. In Chinese medicine, ginger tea with brown sugar is used in the treatment of menstrual cramps.

Ginger has been proven to treat feelings of nausea, particularly in the form of seasickness, morning sickness, motion sickness and as a side effect of chemotherapy.

Ginger aids in the treatment of allergies. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and various other muscular disorders as it also possesses anti inflammatory properties. Research has shown that ginger may provide migraine relief due to its ability to stop prostaglandins from causing pain and inflammation in blood vessels.

Ginger is also used in the treatment of ovarian cancer. It is said to induce cell death in ovarian cancer cells. Other studies also indicate that ginger may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells. It therefore prevents colon cancer.

The intake of ginger juice will warm the body, promoting healthy sweating. This assists in detoxification and boosts the immune system (through the germ-fighting agent in sweat called dermcidin).
