On the fifth floor of Galeria Kaufhof (the German household department store) is an astonishingly huge restaurant area. The restaurant is divided up into four sections with the modern yet comfortable interior differing fractionally depending on whether you are having a meal or not and what atmosphere you want. The food and drink is self service, except in the more formal restaurant section, arranged in a buffet, upmarket canteen style. The prices are very good value for money and the quality of the hot and cold food on offer is superb. The paying before you eat at the cashier concept is employed at Kaufhof, which means that the fuss of waiting for the bill is over. It is a perfect place to go and grab lunch or afternoon tea with a great selection of freshly prepared indulgent cakes. Usually, the restaurant area is very empty which is surprising, given its prime location at Marienplatz. However a lot of shoppers are blissfully unaware of the restaurant or feel that going to the top floor is too much stress after shopping. The Galeria Kaufhof restaurant is well worth a visit when you want to enjoy some easy going, light, German inspired cuisine in peace and quiet.
